Identifying door hinges: EN 1935 international regulations

How do we inspect door hinges to check if they comply? Below are some details from the UNI EN 1935 international regulations.

Choosing the hinges

When we purchase a door, or when we have one made, for it to work properly it is of central importance that we check that its hinges fully comply with our needs and the very installation environment.

Parameters to check

It is not enough to choose a hinge based on the maximum load it can carry. We also need to check that all of its specs satisfy our necessities:

  1. What are the intensity and modality of use of our door?
  2. How many open-close cycles does it need to bear?
  3. How heavy is our door?
  4. Is it a fire-resistant or smoke-resistant door?
  5. Does it have to be safe for the users?
  6. In what kind of environment is our door going to be installed?
  7. Is it a normal door or a tamper-proof door?

On a European level, we should refer to the UNI EN 1935 regulation, which identifies and classifies all of the specs concerning door hinges.

Identifying hinges

Each hinge is classified and precisely identified according to all its characteristics by means of a classifying string. This is composed of 8 digits, and is defined by the UNI EN 1935.

This string can be found on the product label, on the package or on the hinge itself, together with the manufacturer name and the acquired certifications.
